GM foods: First, the facts!
The European Commission has just approved the cultivation of genetically modified foods, and thus the concerns of the population ignored. consumer, health, environment and farmers' organizations have long protested against the few international genetic engineering companies engaged in such a strong impact on European agriculture. The cultivation of GM crops, many concerns are connected: pollution of adjacent farmland, huge burden on the environment by excessive use of additional pesticides and the destruction of biodiversity and regional agriculture and not least the impact of "gene food" on the health of the population.
While some EU member states have spoken clearly against the decision, supports the European Commission to the installation of "BASF-potato" Amflora and Monsanto's corn. Italy, Austria and Hungary to defend themselves against it and France urges more scientific research.
There is still no consensus regarding the long-term effects of genetically modified organisms. The research institutions and regulatory agencies are funded by the GM industry, which has primarily their profit in mind - not the public good. Therefore urge the European citizens more independent research, testing and precautions before a genetically engineered plant is approved in our country.
The "European Citizens' Initiative" is one million EU citizens the opportunity to policy proposals to the European Commission addressed to, and thus offers a unique opportunity to limit the influence of lobbyists.
